Retrofit for the Future

Retrofit for the Future (RTF) is a Central Government funded scheme operated by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). The aim of the scheme is to perform pilot installations to existing affordable housing stock in various parts of the UK, to assess practicality and viability of reducing carbon output of these properties by 80% to comply with their 2050 carbon targets.

The A2Dominion Group proposed 2 schemes to the TSB, a 3 bed semi-detached property and 2 adjoining 5 bed semi-detached properties, all of which had residents in occupation. Two separate Architectural practices were procured and the key elements of work addressed by both were:
• Photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal panels
• Roof and loft insulation (including loft hatches)
• Insulated rendered cladding systems to the external walls
• High performance windows and doors
• High efficiency condensing boilers and Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery systems
• Insulation to voids beneath suspended timber ground floor
• Chimney ventilation relocated sub floor
• Low energy lighting throughout

In the case of the single semi-detached property, the orientation of the roof was not suitable to maximise solar exposure. In order to gain benefit from the PV and solar thermal panel arrays, a purpose built timber structure was erected in the rear garden and the systems installed on this for a suitable orientation.

Works were performed over a 4 month period where we provided strategic and project management advice throughout the programme. Both projects will be monitored over a 2 year period to assess the carbon reductions and benefits brought to both the landlord and the residents. This review by the TSB will highlight which are most successful elements and can be taken forwards to other schemes.
