Last month, we welcomed four work experience students from Villiers High School, Southall, into our office to give them some genuine insight into working in the construction sector as well as guidance on what academic steps they may want to take if they wish to pursue a career in the industry.

Our colleagues Sahib Virdee and Rhema Mahama from the Public Sector Regeneration team mentored Garin and Hassan for one week, showcasing some of the different projects that the team works on. Garin and Hassan gained first-hand knowledge and experience through the opportunity to visit construction sites as well as spending time in our office.

Adam spent a week with Marcus Langford from our Residential Development and Regeneration team. During this time, Adam attended progress meetings, where he had the opportunity to witness the evolution of projects and assisted with monthly valuations and notices for payment at Vinyl Square, gaining valuable insight into the financial aspects. Adam also took part in tender review meetings, where he witnessed the competition and strategic decision-making involved in winning new work and attended a site walk-around at two of our current new build projects.

Archy joined our Marketing team with Ritu Arora Johnson, Rachael Comer and Keisha Ferguson. Archy took on various tasks, including planning and helping create marketing content for our social media platforms as well as developing a news story for our website. Archy explored the different tools we use and how we share this with our clients and those who follow us on various social media platforms.

At John Rowan and Partners, we have offered work experience placements since 2012, creating opportunities for valuable hands-on experience, working alongside skilled mentors. We maintain a structured approach to work experience to make student’s first experience of work and of the construction industry, a rich and valuable one and not just one about photocopying, filing or making tea! We provide students with exposure to gain first-hand insight into various construction processes, techniques, and safety practices to help them decide their next steps in their future careers.
